Dark circles under the eyes are an alteration of skin coloration in the lower part of the eye due to excessive melanin production and dilation of the capillaries near the dermal surface. They are a common aesthetic concern that can significantly affect facial appearance by conveying a tired look.
Their origin allows them to be classified as direct or indirect dark circles:
- Direct dark circles refer to the presence of dark pigmentation or sagging directly in the eye contour area. This cause is often linked to genetic factors, lack of sleep, sun exposure, skin aging and other environmental factors.
- On the other hand, indirect dark circles may be related to skin changes or loss of malar support, which is the collapse or weakening of tissues in the cheekbone region. This loss of support can contribute to shadows and depressions in the infraorbital area, exacerbating the appearance of dark circles.
How we can treat them
Addressing direct or indirect dark circles under the eyes involves a customized approach that may include topical treatments, non-invasive cosmetic procedures, or more advanced interventions.
Topical treatments such as creams with depigmenting ingredients can help reduce pigmentation in direct dark circles, as well as direct fillers with targeted hyaluronic acid. In the case of indirect dark circles it is essential to restore volume and correct the lack of structural support initially, and subsequently correct the sagging of the dark circles if necessary.
Also, some other strategies to address this skin disorder, which we have available in the clinic, may include carboxytherapy, platelet-rich plasma and the use of Q-Switch laser.
It is important to note that the term «dark circles» is generally used to refer to dark coloration or shadows under the eyes. Even so, they can be the result of a number of factors, and the approach to treating them can vary, which is why consultation with an experienced medical aesthetic professional is essential to determine the most appropriate approach, considering individual factors and underlying causes.
Addressing direct or indirect dark circles under the eyes can provide significant improvements in the patient’s appearance and self-confidence.
