What is acne?
Acne is a skin disorder caused by the obstruction of the hair follicles by excess of sebum and dead cells. Not only it can cause changes in the aesthetics of our body but important consequences in terms of self-esteem, acne can also cause irreversible scarring.
Our team of dermatologists has solid experience in its treatment and in removing acne marks with laser. That is why it has become the most recurrent reason for consultation in our clinic. Satisfaction rates endorse the quality of our service, as we have the most advanced procedures in dermatology.
Types of acne
Knowing the type of acne is essential to get the patient’s treatment right and achieve the desired results. The main types of acne are:
Adult Acne
Prevails from the age of 25 onwards. It is more common in women and is usually associated with hormonal changes or stress. It manifests around the mouth area or perioral areas of prolific papules accompanied by inflammation.
Hormonal Acne
Acne linked to hormonal changes. Seborrhoea is increased during periods of increased hormone secretion and can affect adults of any age. It is important to add medication to regulate this hormonal activity.
Comedonal Acne
This is the most characteristic lesion of acne. The increase in sebum secretion obstructs the follicular channel and favours the appearance of comedones. Microdermabrasion is essential to alleviate pore obstruction.
Sever nodular acne
Most severe form of acne. The large size of the sebaceous glands and the proliferation of bacteria play a major role. It also manifests itself in the form of purulent lesions with high capacity to develop scars.
Causes of acne in London
There are four main factors that cause acne:
- Excess in sebum production
Pathological increase in the secretion of the skin’s sebaceous glands, accompanied by chronic inflammation that can lead to itching and erythema of the affected area. It is treated with laser 1340. - Follicle blockage
It happens because the epidermis or skin cover is fragile and thin. It does not exercise its barrier function well and water is easily lost, causing itching or discomfort to the skin. Microdermabrasion is the technique used to remove the most superficial layers.
- Infection
Bacteria proliferation favoured by pore blockage. The most typical bacterium is called Propionibacterium acnes and causes itching and redness. We use blue light to destroy the bacteria. - Inflammation
This occurs when the hair follicles become infected with bacteria. Biological light therapy with red LED light (640 nm) calms the skin and causes skin regeneration.
Acne treatment in London
At De Felipe Dermatology Clinic we combine the latest technology in acne treatment with the most precise routines to continue the care at home. Here is more about our procedures.
Cause: Follicle obstruction
Air peeling
In facial cleansing, the skin is compressed in order to remove impurities. However, this can cause trauma to the face. In contrast, if instead of squeezing the skin is suctioned – by negative pressure – pimple and plugs that cause sebum retention are removed. This procedure is called air peeling or microdermabrasion.
One session every 15 days for a quarter of a year has been shown to have the following effects:
- Seborrhoea reduction by 42%
- Acne lesions reduction by 65%
- Skin hydration and skin compactness improvement
Cause: Inflammation and infection
Red Light and Blue Light
The second natural procedure we use to reduce acne is red and blue light, also known as photobiological therapy.
Photobiological therapy consist of periodic sessions with monochromatic or pure blue and red light. While blue is very toxic to bacteria and can destroy them without the use of antibiotics, red is a powerful skin regenerator. It is performed in 15-minute sessions and is completely painless.
If you need more information about this dermatological procedure, we recommend you read the study acne golderb and acne lee.
The advantages of using this technology are:
It is completely external and non-invasive
- Pharmaceutical products that cause interactions with the body are not used
- The treatment is natural and takes advantage of the biological qualities of the bacteria
- It is painless
- It does not produce alterations that prevent us from following a normal life
- Several sessions are carried out
- The frequency is weekly or fortnightly
- It can be combined with other treatments
Cause: Excessive sebum production
Láser PRODEEP or 1340
The third of the procedures we use is the PRODEEP or 1340 laser. This type of red/infrared laser heats and penetrates deep into the skin, reducing the size of the sebaceous glands and thus the original cause of the acne. A total of four sessions are needed and are performed on a monthly basis. Each session lasts 15 minutes and leaves a blush on the face which disappears after 2 hours.
The use of laser has the following advantages:
- It is non-invasive procedure. We do not introduce medication and there are no side effects.
- The heat changes the size of the sebaceous glands and reduces he likelihood of acne recurrence in the future.
- Lasers also improve other structures in the skin such as scars or skin pigmentation, often the result of the acne itself.
The lasers used in dermatology for the treatment of acne are:
- Non-ablative fractionated infrared lasers such as 1340 or Nd:YAP. This laser is also called PRODEEP. A study showed that 4 sessions were able to eliminate 95% of active acne lesions. See study.
- IPL also improves texture and synthesises collagen.
- Vascular or pulsed dye lasers.
MAINTENANCE PROGRAMME
After completing the attack programme, we recommend scheduling maintenance sessions every 3 months to prevent relapses or exacerbations. These sessions combine microdermabrasion, photobiological therapy and PRODEEP laser.
