The CO2 laser is one of the most popular treatments in dermatology. It has many benefits, but there is one thing that some people have concerns about: the recovery period.
After CO2 laser treatment, it is important to follow your dermatologist’s instructions carefully to ensure a safe and effective recovery and healthy skin.
Although care may vary slightly depending on the intensity at which the laser was applied, there are some basic aftercare steps to follow after CO2 laser treatment to help you get the most out of your experience and achieve the results you want.
- Cleaning. When we perform sessions with this laser, we are removing part of the most superficial layer of skin, making it more susceptible to bacteria and other impurities that can cause infection. It is therefore important to wash your hands before touching your face.
It is also important to wash the treated area twice a day with warm water and a mild cleanser.
- Be careful when using cosmetic products. In the days following CO2 laser treatment, the use of cosmetic products must be aimed at promoting the skin’s regeneration process. Until the skin is completely regenerated, it is necessary to avoid any type of acid (salicylic, glycolic, mandelic…) and any retinoid (retinol, retinal…). The active ingredients that are suitable for skin care are those that promote the regeneration of the skin barrier. Examples are growth factors, panthenol, centella asiatica or vitamin B3. The last step in your skincare routine should always be sunscreen.
- Avoid sun exposure for at least the first 7 days. The skin will become sensitised, so the sun can cause sunburn or irritation, there is a greater risk of pigmentation and the healing process will be prolonged.
If the treated area is not covered by clothing, it is important to use a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 and to reapply several times a day. Also cover the area with protective clothing, hats and/or sunglasses.
- Eat a healthy diet and drink enough water. Eating a variety of nutritious foods, rich in vitamins and antioxidants, and drinking enough water is important to promote skin recovery, collagen production, and keep the skin hydrated from the inside out.
- Avoid exercise for the first 4 days, as it can cause inflammation and irritation of the skin and increase the risk of infection.
- Avoid hot environments, saunas and swimming pools. You can take showers but do not take baths, and avoid hot water and steam.
When showering, be sure to wash your hair from behind to avoid getting shampoo directly on the treated area.
