Water is essential for the correct functioning of the body and our organs. It has a protective function for the skin as it contributes to the elimination of toxins and external pollutants; it helps in cell regeneration, preventing dead cells from accumulating and our skin from losing its shine; it helps to keep the skin hydrated; it improves blood flow; and it even contributes to the natural regulation of our body temperature.
The human body is made up of 70%-75% water, but just because we stop drinking water, we won’t lose the body’s natural water composition.
Drinking water is not really reflected in the skin, as the body prioritises hydration of other more essential organs, such as the kidneys, the brain, the heart… in the same way, as it is one of the last organs to receive water, it is also one of the first to show signs of lack of hydration.
But, what if we are dehydrated?
Collagen, a protein in our body that allows the skin to remain firm and smooth in texture, one of its secondary functions is to help retain water for the skin. When the skin is not hydrated, these fibres break down resulting in:
- The appearance of fine wrinkles and fine lines.
- The skin becomes dry, may flake and feel tight. Appears duller.
- Loss of firmness and elasticity.
How to improve skin hydration?
- Moisturise on the outside too: use moisturising products (creams and serums) daily, especially if your skin tends to dry out easily and is sensitive.
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol: both have a dehydrating effect on the body, so excessive consumption can age the skin more quickly.
- Cleanse your skin properly: use gentle cleansers that do not remove the skin’s natural barrier.
- Dermatological-aesthetic treatments: such as microneedling combined with certain active ingredients that moisturise the skin, application of collagen biostimulators, or infiltration of vitamins and/or a ‘light’ hyaluronic acid, as its function is to retain water for the skin.
- See your dermatologist: he or she will help you determine the best care plan and can recommend treatments to improve skin hydration.
