Neuromodulators Growth stimulant.

What are they ?

Neuromodulators, or botulinum toxin, are a group of molecules used as medication to treat dystonias—disorders caused by excessive muscle contraction, muscle paralysis, or uncontrollable muscle tightening. They are also used to reduce the appearance of certain wrinkles and to treat excessive sweating.

According to several published studies, botulinum toxin injections can help stimulate hair growth. In a 2020 study by Zhou et al., one group of patients received botulinum toxin injections in the scalp, while another group was treated with finasteride. The group that received botulinum toxin showed better results. Other studies have also shown that neuromodulators can promote hair growth. Although the exact mechanism is not fully understood, it is believed that botulinum toxin relaxes the muscles, increases growth factors, and improves blood flow and nutrient delivery to the hair.

What does the procedure involve?

The procedure is done in the same way as injecting a neuromodulator into the face or any other area where it is medically indicated. In published cases, between 50 and 100 international units of the neuromodulator have been injected into the scalp’s dermis, and this seems to have stimulated hair growth.

There are several theories about how neuromodulators work in hair loss conditions, but the exact reason why so many patients respond well is still unknown.

It’s believed that this type of injection increases growth factors, which might positively affect follicle growth in different types of alopecia. Some experts also suggest that a vascular or even muscular factor might influence how hair follicles grow. However, it is still unclear if this is truly why hair density and thickness improve with this “off-label” treatment
.

What is a session like?

We prepare the area to be treated.

3. PRODECIDE

The neuromodulator treatment is performed with microneedles to reduce pain.

4. DEPOSITS

Small deposits of product are placed on the areas with hair loss.

5. MINIMIZED DISCOMFORT

The sessions are performed with the assistance of a vibrating device to minimize discomfort.

6. RETURN TO YOUR ROUTINE

You can return to your normal routine immediately after the procedure.

How often are sessions necessary?

Neuromodulator treatments are usually performed every 4 to 6 months, but this can vary depending on the indication.

Your dermatologist is the best person to help you choose the appropriate frequency for your mesotherapy treatments.

When will I see results?

Treatment results using neuromodulators usually begin to be seen after 3 months. The reason we have to wait this long is the length of the hair growth cycle on the scalp, which is 3 years.

Who is a good candidate?

Microinjection of neuromodulators is a new second-line treatment for alopecia. For this reason, it is reserved for patients who expressly consent or for those whose treatment has not worked adequately.

The type of alopecia with the most experience with this treatment is androgenetic alopecia, in both men and women. Interestingly, this is the most common type of alopecia, affecting 85% of men and 40% of women. It is more prevalent in Caucasians and less prevalent in Asians.

Contraindications

The procedure should not be performed on people with serious concomitant conditions, such as those undergoing active cancer treatment or those with fever, serious infection, or similar conditions. For complete details on contraindications, consult your physician.

It is contraindicated in pregnant women.

Pre- and/or Post-Treatment Advice

  • It is important not to wash your hair on the day of treatment.
    After treatment, to avoid irritation and ensure proper product penetration, it is advisable to postpone the next wash until the day after the injection or microinjection.

Scientific Evidence

 

There are 53 articles published in peer-reviewed journals on the effect of neuromodulators or botulinum toxin on hair.

In a pioneering study published in 2020, 63 patients were recruited and assigned to two groups: one treated with botulinum toxin injections into the scalp and the other in which this treatment was combined with finasteride. In both groups, hair density increased significantly, ranging from 73% to 84%, with virtually no difference due to the addition of finasteride (Zhou Y, Yu S, Zhao J, Feng X, Zhang M, Zhao Z. Effectiveness and Safety of Botulinum Toxin Type A in the Treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia. Biomed Res Int. 2020 Aug 4;2020:1501893. doi: 10.1155/2020/1501893. PMID: 32802833; PMCID: PMC7424364). This demonstrates that neuromodulators are as effective as first-line treatments.

In another study published in 2022, neuromodulators or botulinum toxin were injected into the scalp of 31 patients with androgenetic alopecia, demonstrating a statistically significant increase in hair thickness and density from the start of treatment (Nassar A, Abdel-Aleem H, Samir M, Khattab FM. Efficacy of botulinum toxin A injection in the treatment of androgenic alopecia: A comparative controlled study. J Cosmet Dermatol. 2022 Oct;21(10):4261-4268. doi: 10.1111/jocd.14817. Treatment with neuromodulators also appears to be effective in alopecia areata (Barton VR, Toussi A, Awasthi S, Kiuru M. Treatment of pediatric alopecia areata: A systematic review. Blood tests are not required before a PRP treatment.

Dye or other hair products do not affect Platelet-Rich Plasma treatments, although we generally recommend avoiding any unnecessary treatments 72 hours before and after sessions.

It is recommended to wash your hair at least 12 hours after the treatment.

Yes, you can exercise after a PRP session, although the treated area may be slightly swollen or sore. We recommend avoiding exercise for the first 12 hours.

It is possible to experience a headache after hair PRP sessions, which will disappear in the next few hours or days. If this happens, we recommend taking a common pain reliever.

It is not necessary to perform Platelet Rich Plasma sessions on an empty stomach.
