What is it?

Low-level lasers emit red light around 635 nm and stimulate hair growth. This effect was first observed in 1969 in studies conducted on mice. In 2009, the FDA approved the use of a red light device for the treatment of alopecia. The mechanism underlying this effect is believed to be the stimulation of mitochondria within cells, which provides more energy to the cell, allows for rapid tissue repair, and lengthens the hair growth phase.

Low-power lasers have long been used to treat alopecia, wounds, or any tissue repair procedure in general. It appears that this type of laser accelerates tissue repair. There is considerable scientific evidence supporting this claim. For example, the red light from some hair removal lasers may also stimulate the paradoxical hair growth effect in some patients who undergo red laser hair removal.

What does the procedure involve?

Low-level lasers emit light in the visible spectrum for several minutes. They differ from pulsed lasers as they reach the skin in very short pulses, while pulsed lasers reach the skin in several minutes. In pulsed lasers, the light is transformed into heat, while in low-level lasers, the light does not heat the skin, but rather stimulates a chemical reaction.

Current devices typically emit this light through laser-emitting diodes. These devices have these LEDs on a surface or panel. There are notacible differences between the devices, primarily in their power. Some devices emit 10 or 12 watts per cm2, while other devices used in clinics have power levels reaching 600 or 900 watts per cm2. For comparison, the light emitted by the sun has an irradiance of 50 j/cm2, which is equivalent to a power of 50 Ω/cm2.

The areas of skin or scalp requiring treatment are placed at a distance of one hand, and the eyes are protected with goggles or a mask that filter visible light. The treatment is completely painless, and no heat is perceived, since these low-energy lasers emit in the visible spectrum, not the infrared. Infrared radiation is precisely what heats the water, and this is not used in this type of equipment.

What is a session like?

How often are sessions necessary?

The frequency of low-level laser sessions will depend on the degree of each person’s alopecia, although they are generally performed every two weeks.

When will I see results?

The first results after biweekly low-level laser sessions begin to be visible between sessions 6 and 10.

Who is a good candidate?

All patients with alopecia are good candidates for low-level laser treatment. There is scientific evidence for all types of alopecia, from androgenetic alopecia to inflammatory alopecia and scarring, in both women and men.

Contraindications

Patients with epilepsy sensitive to pulsed light. There are no other contraindications.

  • Low-level laser treatment does not require any pre- or post-treatment care.

Scientific Evidence

 

There are numerous clinical studies that indicate the effectiveness of low-level lasers in the treatment of alopecia.

A clinical study published in 2021 showed that laser is as effective as minoxidil, and the combination of the two is even more effective.
A 2017 review of laser treatment reviewed the results of 11 different studies involving 680 patients and showed that low-level lasers predominantly increased hair thickness and density (Afifi L, Maranda El, Zarei M, Delcanto GM, Falto-Aizpurua L, Kluijfhout WP, Jimenez JJ. The application of low-level laser reduces inflammation in the scalp, making it very useful in inflammatory alopecia such as alopecia areata and scarring.
