What telogen effluvium?
Telogen effluvium refers to a reduction in hair density due to many follicles entering the resting phase.
It’s important to keep in mind that the telogen phase of hair on the scalp typically lasts three months, while the growth, called anagen phase lasts about three years. If we consider that we have approximately 100,000 hairs, we can deduce that approximately 100 hairs should fall out each day and another 100 should grow in their place.
Clinical Signs
The patient perceives that the amount of hair falling out when combing or after washing is larger than normal. Because the hair loss is diffuse and affects the entire scalp, the patient perceives a decreased hair density. However, when examined by trichoscopy, the hair thickness remains normal and no inflammatory signs or anisotrichosis are present.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis is clinical and is established based on the patient’s description and by observing that the hair is normal under the trichoscope. The Pull Test may be positive. The Rebora Test is usually positive.
Biopsies or blood tests do not provide relevant data and are usually normal.
