Monofilament threads.

73% higher density.

What are they ?

Monofilament threads are used to stimulate the dermis and the formation of new collagen and skin rejuvenation. They are composed of the same materials used to make surgical sutures and are designed to be absorbed by the body within a limited period of time. The most common suture materials used in these sutures are polylactic acid, polydioxanone (PDO), or polycaprolactone (PCL). The most commonly used material for hair stimulation has been PDO.

What does the procedure involve?

The PDO used in the suture threads is fully absorbed by the body within 3 to 8 months. During this time, the skin is repaired and many new growth factors are generated, positively affecting the growth of the follicles present in the scalp.

When injected beneath the scalp, noticeable hair growth occurs due to the stimulation of follicular stem cells.

What is a session like?

1. INITIAL EVALUATION

We assess the area to be treated, explain the procedure, and answer any questions you may have.

2. PREPARATION

We prepare the area to be treated.

3. PRODECIDE

The monofilament thread treatment is performed with microneedles to reduce pain.

4. NO DISCOMFORT

30 to 50 threads are used per treated area; the procedure is minimally uncomfortable.

5. RETURN TO YOUR ROUTINE

You can return to your normal routine immediately after the procedure.

Is it painful?

Minimally painful. We use pain-reducing systems.

Does it require sick leave?

No

How long does a session take?

15 minutes

Recovery time

Immediate

How often are sessions necessary?

Monofilament thread treatments are usually performed annually, but this can vary depending on the indication.

The best person to help you choose the appropriate frequency for your mesotherapy treatments is your dermatologist specializing in trichology.

When will I see results?

Treatment results using PDO threads usually begin to appear after 3 months. The reason we have to wait this long is the length of the hair cycle on the scalp, which is 3 years.

Who is a good candidate?

The PDO thread injection procedure for scalp hair stimulation in alopecia is reserved as an option for patients suffering from alopecia who cannot undergo other treatments because they are contraindicated, or who wish to try this innovative technique, recently added to the therapeutic arsenal of trichology specialists.

Contraindications

The procedure should not be performed on people with serious concomitant conditions, such as those undergoing active cancer treatment or those with fever, serious infection, or similar conditions. For complete details on contraindications, consult your physician.

Pre- and/or Post-Treatment Advice

  • It is common to experience some pain in the treated area of the scalp. This pain is self-limiting, meaning it resolves on its own, and does not require treatment unless the patient wishes to alleviate the discomfort and take a painkiller. Occasionally, some patients experience some pain or swelling in the scalp, similar to those experienced after microinjections or mesotherapy with other substances. This is a self-limiting reaction that resolves spontaneously, but it can be a cause for concern in some patients. Treatment is not required, but anti-inflammatory medications can optionally be taken for one to three days.

  • For other advice, side effects, or adverse reactions, please consult the informed consent form provided by your physician.

Scientific Evidence

The use of monofilament threads, for example, made from materials like PDO, is a very innovative treatment for alopecia.

A recent study found that a group of patients with androgenetic alopecia treated with PDO threads on the scalp improved hair density and thickness (Bharti J, Sonthalia S, Patil P, Dhurat R. Scalp threading with polydioxanone monofilament threads: a novel, effective, and safe modality for hair restoration. J Eur Acad Dermatol Venereol. 2017 Nov;31(11):e492-e493. doi: 10.1111/jdv.14336. Epub 2017 Jul 3. PMID: 28502076.).
Another group of researchers published results on a group of patients with female androgenetic alopecia. Those who received PDO threads on their scalp experienced a 73% increase in hair density, while the placebo group experienced no growth (Metwalli M, Khattab FM, Mandour S. Monofilament threads in treatment of female hair loss. J Dermatolog Treat. 2021 Aug;32(5):521-525. doi: 10.1080/09546634.2019.1682499. Epub 2020 Mar 3. PMID: 31619089).
The mechanism of action of monofilament threads in patients with alopecia appears to be the same as that of the repair that occurs after microneedling: the skin’s reaction to the repair it undergoes with the insertion of the threads secretes a chain of growth factors that increase hair density and thickness (Vathananai W, Jimenez F. What Do We Know About Hair Growth Induced by Wounding and Its Therapeutic Applications? Dermatol Surg. 2023 Nov 1;49(11):995-1000. doi: 10.1097/DSS.0000000000003901. Epub 2023 Aug 17. PMID: 37606639.).
