What exactly is the exposome?
The term was coined in 2005 by epidemiologist Christopher Wild to describe the totality of non-genetic exposures to which an individual is subjected throughout their lifetime. - Solar radiation: the primary aggressor. UVA rays generate free radicals that damage cellular DNA and activate enzymes that degrade collagen and elastin, accelerating the appearance of wrinkles, laxity, and pigmentation. UVB rays, although they only reach the epidermis, produce direct DNA damage and are the primary cause of sunburn and the risk of skin cancer. How does all of this manifest in my skin?
The common biological denominator of all these factors is oxidative stress: when the production of free radicals exceeds the skin’s antioxidant capacity, a cascade of damage occurs that affects DNA, cell membranes, and the extracellular matrix. Collagen degrades, elastin loses flexibility, and cellular renewal slows down. The visible result is earlier wrinkles, loss of firmness, irregular pigmentation, and a duller skin texture.

What can I do to protect my skin from the exposome?
Whilst no single measure eliminates exposure entirely, scientific evidence supports the following strategies:

- Topical antioxidants (vitamin C, niacinamide, or resveratrol) applied in the morning to reinforce the skin’s defences against radiation and pollution.
- A nightly facial cleansing routine to remove deposits of pollutant particles from the skin before sleep.
- An anti-inflammatory diet, rich in vegetables, fruit, extra virgin olive oil, and omega-3, which modulate the systemic inflammatory response.
- Stress management and restorative sleep, which allow the skin to activate its nocturnal repair mechanisms.
